The display includes an array of works by physicians, pharmacists and anatomists of the 17th and 18th centuries. The exhibition will remain on display in the Library until the end of March.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the books on display show what were ground-breaking discoveries in medicine at the time. Much o<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">f what is assumed as common knowledge in modern medicine was only then being discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p>They cover a wide range of subjects: detailed information on medical conditions and pharmaceutical practices from 1753; one of the first general treatises on army medicine from 1764; and a 1624 volume that covers a multitude of topics from digestion to goblins.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition also includes books valued by ships\u2019 surgeons, such as John Woodall\u2019s The Surgeon\u2019s Mate from 1639, and the 13th edition of William Cheselden\u2019s The Anatomy of the Human Body, first published in 1713, which became popular with medical students.<\/p>\n<p>The Library\u2019s Archivist, Thirza Mulder, and Visitor Assistant, Rachel Toner researched and compiled the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Angela Carragher, President of the Ulster Medical Society, launched the exhibition. At the event, she said, \u201cMany of the books on display in this exhibition are by names well known in present day medicine and surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Library\u2019s Keeper, the Very Revd Gregory Dunstan said, \u201cIn the light of modern medicine, some of the old techniques seem terrifying, or even bizarre. However, they mark stages upon which knowledge of that astonishingly complex organism, the human body, has been built. They also reflect developments in the fullness of human knowledge which the Library, \u2018the Healing Place of the Soul\u2019, reflects, and to which it is committed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>The Library has launched its most recent exhibition on medical books.
