In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First A Surgeon, And Then A Captain Of Several Ships<\/em>, commonly known as <em>Gulliver\u2019s Travels<\/em>, written by Jonathan Swift. It is one of the Library\u2019s main attractions, and is of particular interest to our Japanese visitors.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/demo.brandingbay.com\/ARL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_3076.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"  wp-image-7558 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/demo.brandingbay.com\/ARL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_3076.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3076\" width=\"323\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"http:\/\/demo.brandingbay.com\/ARL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_3076.jpg 673w, http:\/\/demo.brandingbay.com\/ARL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_3076-600x891.jpg 600w, http:\/\/demo.brandingbay.com\/ARL\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_3076-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Gulliver\u2019s Travels,<\/em> written at a time when Japan was increasingly visited by English and Portuguese millionaires, contains a short story featuring Japan in part III of the book. The main character, Lemuel Gulliver, visits Japan, the only real country to occur in the book besides the fictional countries Swift created. It is argued that Swift used the country of Japan to contrast both Dutch and European customs, by presenting the Japanese as reasonable in a period when Europe was generally distrustful of Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>In the satire Swift also showed his opposition to the Dutch policy of freedom of religion which loosely began in the late 16<sup>th<\/sup> century. Gulliver poses as a Dutchman throughout his travels in Japan, but his nationality is called into question because he has not \u2018trampled on the crucifix\u2019 as the other Dutchmen do in the story.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Swift\u2019s interest in Japan resulted in another of work on Japan being published in 1728, <em>An Account of the Court and Empire of Japan<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Windows on Japan: A Walk through Place and Perception<\/em> by Bruce Roscoe, Algora Publishing: 2007<br \/>\n<em>Gulliver\u2019s Travels and Japan: A New Reading<\/em> by Phillip E.
