The Library will be the venue for a public talk by Professor Moyra Haslett on\u00a0Thursday 28 November 2013 at 7.30pm, in advance of Armagh\u2019s Georgian Day.<\/p>\n

In her talk, \u2018Richard Robinson\u2019s Famous Cousin: Elizabeth Montagu\u2019, Professor Haslett will\u00a0consider the relationship between Richard Robinson, Archbishop of Armagh, and his cousin\u00a0Elizabeth Montagu, known as the \u2018Queen of the Bluestockings\u2019. Their friendship spanned over\u00a0fifty years and shows both these famous personalities in a new light.<\/p>\n

The talk will particularly focus on the portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds, which the cousins\u00a0exchanged as gifts, and on selected letters from Robinson to Montagu (now in the collection\u00a0of the Huntington library). Archbishop of Armagh from 1765 to 1795, Robinson is famous\u00a0for commissioning so many of the buildings which make up the Georgian fabric of the\u00a0city. Montagu may be lesser known in Armagh but is currently a very important figure for\u00a0scholarship on women\u2019s writing and female patronage in the eighteenth century. Surviving\u00a0letters from Robinson to Montagu, forty in all, give us a glimpse into the private, familial lives\u00a0of these two powerful personalities.<\/p>\n

Books and prints relevant to the topic of the relationship between Richard Robinson and\u00a0Elizabeth Montagu will be on display during and after the talk.<\/p>\n

Moyra Haslett is Professor of Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Period Literature in the School\u00a0of English, Queen\u2019s University Belfast. She was educated at Trinity College Dublin, where she\u00a0became a Scholar in 1988. After lecturing positions in the University of Luton and St Patrick\u2019s\u00a0College, Drumcondra, she joined Queen\u2019s University in 1999. She is the author of three books\u00a0on literary studies, and has most recently edited a novel published in 1756 for the \u2018Early Irish\u00a0Fiction\u2019 series, of which she is series co-editor. Her first monograph, on the poetry of Lord\u00a0Byron, was awarded the Rose Mary Crawshay prize by the British Academy. The Georgian\u00a0Day Talk comes out of her research into the Bluestockings, a topic on which she has published\u00a0several articles, and which is a major feature of her forthcoming book, Before the Bluestockings:\u00a0imagining female community, 1690-1780. She is a regular visitor to the Armagh Public Library\u00a0and will be bringing the annual conference of the \u2018Eighteenth-Century Ireland Society\u2019 to the\u00a0Library in June 2014.<\/p>\n
