The fresco started to decay a few decades after it was made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The original fresco was executed in various tones of a single colour. It was intended to evoke the character of another medium: relief sculpture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">To recreate the different tones, Cherubino used both overlapping lines and lines graduating in thickness, giving the effect of contour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The effect of modelling in three dimensions through tone is known as \u2018chiaroscuro\u2019 (\u2018light-dark\u2019). The result is the complete opposite of the bright clarity of Michelangelo\u2019s Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel. Here, the creation of mankind is a mysterious event, taking place in a world not yet fully illuminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\"><div Florentine historian and statesman<strong>,<\/strong> Francesco Guicciardini<strong>,<\/strong> describes history as \u2018a sea whipped by winds\u2019\u200b\u200b (<em>uno mare concitato da\u2019 venti<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The phrase sums up the social, scientific, religious and political unrest that was felt at the time. To this day, the mausoleum is known as the Castel Sant\u2019Angelo. Labacco was one of the first to illustrate architecture in engraving, allowing for greater detail and three-dimensional shading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In the second print, the teenage Girolamo Rainaldi illustrates his own lavish catafalque (funeral platform) for the art patron Alessandro Farnese. Calumny, or slander, surrounded byEnvy, Treachery and Deceit drags the innocent Apelles before the judge, King Midas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Flanked by Ignorance and Suspicion King Midas is shown with ass\u2019s ears. The god Apollo turned his ears into ass\u2019s ears, when Midas chose a satyr\u2019s music over Apollo\u2019s. In this case he is shown as a symbol for the inability to make sound judgements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Time is shown to the left, bringing in his daughter, Truth, to reveal the actual facts. Battista was trained by a painter who used designs by Giulio Romano to paint wall paintings in Verona Cathedral. This may explain how Battista found the source for this work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The medium of etching, with its fluid lines, was well suited to preserving the effect of drawings. It may have been made either after the fresco itself or after a preliminary drawing by the artist, Giuseppe Cesari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The scene depicts the equestrian army of the legendary third king of Rome, Tullus Hostilius, defeating the Etruscan warriors of the Veii tribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The bearded figure between the two horsemen on the left is a self-portrait of Cesari.
