This book exhibition celebrated the 50th anniversary of Armagh Planetarium<\/a>. It highlights works on astronomy from the collections of the Library.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Astronomy is the branch of science which examines celestial objects, space and the physical universe as a whole. Celestial objects include planets, moons, stars, galaxies and comets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is one of the oldest sciences. In Mesopotamia, records of astronomical measurements have been found which date back 5,000 years. Ancient Chinese, Babylonian and Greek civilisations also kept records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work is considered to be one of the most important in the\nhistory of science. Newton\u2019s Law of Universal Gravitation is\nexplained in Volume I. Volume III: De Mundi Systemate<\/em> lists\nthe many consequences of universal gravitation for astronomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Newton was an important figure in the Scientific Revolution of the\nearly modern period (1500 \u2013 1800). At this time, developments in\nmathematics, physics, astronomy, biology and chemistry transformed\nthe commonly held views of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Copernicus\u2019s heliocentric (sun-centred) astronomical model,\npublished in 1534, is considered the period\u2019s starting point, and\nNewton\u2019s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica<\/em> its\ncompletion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1694 Isaac Newton visited the King\u2019s Astronomer, Flamsteed, at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. One of Flamsteed\u2019s main duties was to obtain star positions and to develop a lunar theory (an account of the motions of the Moon) which would be accurate enough for navigators to determine longitudes at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Newton, who saw that Flamsteed\u2019s theory was not accurate enough, tried to develop a more precise theory. The elements of Newton\u2019s A New and Most Accurate Theory of the Moon\u2019s Motion<\/em> are presented without explanation to support his discovery. Although Newton\u2019s theory is not as accurate as he claimed it to be, it was far more accurate than any other at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Louis XIV founded the Paris\nObservatory, which was built between 1667 and 1671. He was encouraged\nto do so by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Minister of Finances and Secretary\nof State for the Navy, to increase France’s maritime power and\ninternational trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The establishment of the\nObservatory was considered an important achievement and was included\nin a series of commemorative medals commissioned to celebrate the\nreign and achievements of Louis XIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1724, the mathematician\nand theologian, William Whiston, published a broadsheet, The\nCalculation of Solar Eclipses Without Parallexes<\/em>,\non the occasion of the solar eclipse of that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The solar eclipses of 1724\nand 1737 offered him many opportunities to make a living from\nlecturing, writing, teaching, and selling glasses and instruments.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Between late 1680 and early\n1681, a very large and bright comet was seen in the sky throughout\nmuch of the Northern Hemisphere. Discovered by German astronomer,\nGottfried Kirch, it was the first comet to be observed through a\ntelescope. It was apparently so bright that it was visible even\nduring daytime! Aptly called the Great Comet of 1680, it was also\nknown as Kirch\u2019s comet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many thought the comet was\na sign of impending divine punishment. In his text Edward Wettenhall,\nBishop of Cork and Ross, and a member of the Dublin Philosophical\nSociety, tried to reassure readers that the comet was nothing\nsupernatural and that its presence was to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 1800s, the\nFrench physicist and astronomer Jean-Baptiste Biot, was concerned\nthat the results of modern scientific research were not being\nintegrated into the education system quickly enough. In 1805, he\npublished this textbook Trait\u00e9 \u00c9l\u00e9mentaire d’Astronomie Physique,\nspecifically for teaching in secondary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Biot was very important in\nestablishing the extraterrestrial origin of meteors. In April 1803, a\nshower of more than 3,000 \u2018stones\u2019 landed near the town of\nL\u2019Aigle in France. Biot was sent by the Acad\u00e9mie Fran\u00e7aise to\ninvestigate them. He found evidence to support the extraterrestrial\norigin of the stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Firstly, the type of stone\nthat had fallen was completely different to anything found locally.\nSecondly, a large number of witnesses from all walks of life saw \u2018a\nrain of stones thrown by the meteor\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since Biot\u2019s discovery,\nthe analysis of meteorites has resulted in accurate measurements of\nthe chemical composition of the solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French astronomer and\nmathematician, Pierre Gassendi, was a renowned scientist and the\nfirst person to observe the transit of a planet, namely Mercury,\nacross the sun, as predicted by Kepler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
