SUMMARY:Exhibition - A Spotlight on the Beresford Collection : Rediscovering Treasures from the Prehistoric to the Medieval
DESCRIPTION:Marcus Gervais Beresford (1801–1885) was born in Dublin into an affluent family. He was ordained\, and served\, in the Church of Ireland\, and was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1862. \nHe was a keen collector of antiquities dating from the prehistoric to medieval times. \nHis son\, George de la Poer Beresford\, bequeathed his father’s collection to the Library after the Archbishop’s death in 1885. The collection is on display\, both in the original cabinets in the Long Room\, and in No 5 Vicars’ Hill. \nThis exhibition shows an eclectic mixture of artefacts together with some new insights into their use.

SUMMARY:A Hidden Gem on the Ancient Hill - Armagh Diocesan Registry
DESCRIPTION:This year No 5 Vicars Hill (the former Armagh Provincial and Diocesan Registry) is celebrating its 250th anniversary. Join Registry Officer\, Dr Stephen Day\, as he outlines the building’s history. This event is taking place online outside the normal opening hours for the Library and No 5 Vicars’ Hill. \n\n\n\nFounded in 1772 (a year after the nearby Armagh Robinson Library) and located just opposite the west door of St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral\, it is a small\, hidden gem of a building. Outside its appearance blends in perfectly with the other buildings of this pretty terrace of George II and George III houses. However\, inside\, the building consists mainly of two large domed rooms – perfect for the storing and safe keeping of important documents including the valuable medieval Registers which Archbishop Robinson deposited here in the late 18th century. It was also to serve for the ongoing transactions of the Archbishop and his successors in their diocesan and metropolitan administration. \n\n\n\nThis Grade A listed building was restored and opened to the public in 2011 and the two rooms now contain treasures which Archbishops Robinson and Marcus G. Beresford donated to the Library as well as many other historical and religious exhibits which assist in understanding the rich history of Armagh and the surrounding area. \n\n\n\nFree tickets for this event need to be pre-booked via ArtTickets. If you have any difficulty booking a place through this online system\, please email admin@armaghrobinsonlibrary.co.uk or call 028 3752 3142.

SUMMARY:Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell : A Quaker Astronomer Reflects
DESCRIPTION:Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a Quaker (a member of the Religious Society of Friends) and a professional astronomer and will talk about how these combine in her life. \n\n\n\nBell Burnell grew up in Lurgan\, Co. Armagh. Her father was an architect who helped design Armagh Planetarium. In 1967\, as a postgraduate student at the University of Cambridge\, she discovered pulsars – rotating neutron stars that appear to pulse as the radio beam they emit sweeps repeatedly across the Earth. The discovery is considered to be one of the greatest astronomical discoveries of the 20th century. \n\n\n\nShe has received many honours and awards for her contributions to science. These include the Herschel Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1989 and the Royal Medal of the Royal Society in 2015. In 2021 she received the Royal Society’s prestigious Copley Medal\, the world’s oldest scientific prize\, joining past winners including Charles Darwin\, Albert Einstein and Dorothy Hodgkin. \n\n\n\nBell Burnell has served as President of the Royal Astronomical Society (2002–2004)\, the Institute of Physics (2008–2010) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2014–2018). Made a Dame in 2007\, she is currently a Visiting Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford and Chancellor of Dundee University. \n\n\n\n\nBell Burnell is also a prominent and active Quaker. She was Clerk to the Britain Yearly Meeting in 1995\, 1996 and 1997\, and served as Clerk of the Central Executive Committee of Friends World Committee for Consultation from 2008 to 2012. \n\n\n\nThis event has been organised as part of British Science Week. \n\n\n\nTickets are free\, but need to be booked through Art Tickets.

SUMMARY:A Journey Through Maps: Exploring Ireland's Cartographic Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Keith D Lilley (Queen’s University Belfast) & Catherine Porter (University of Limerick) \n\n\n\nWho mapped Ireland\, and how? Spanning five centuries of mapping in Ireland\, this talk will explore the importance of field-survey in the map-making process. From the early-seventeenth century maps of Josias Bodley and the Escheated Counties of Ulster\, through to the early Ordnance Survey six-inch maps under Thomas Colby\, we shall journey through Ireland’s rich cartographic heritage and revisit those landscapes and localities where surveyors had traversed and plotted the ground. Looking ‘behind’ the map\, to the field\, opens up new and interesting perspectives on how Ireland was mapped in the past. \n\n\n\nFree places can be booked through our Arts Ticket page: https://armagh-robinson-library.arttickets.org.uk/
