On Friday 19 September 2014, the Hill of Armagh had four venues where staff provided a welcome and hosted performers of music, drama and art for Armagh’s Culture Night. Below are photographs of a selection of the events which were held at the Library and No 5.
Gerry Oates gave a talk on the role of the United Irishmen’s movement in Armagh in 1798 and used some of the Library’s collection to support his findings.Having been with his primary school for a ‘Morning on the Hill’ visit earlier in the year, Michael Haughey returned to sing and play the guitar in the Library’s Long Room.The Oriel Singers from Monaghan sang a range of ballads and songs from the shows, accompanied by their director Eleanor Gilsenan.Musician Aine Devlin brought the performances in the Library to a finish with renditions of modern songs.In No 5, local young people performed a specially created drama called ‘The Keepers of the Hill’, arranged by Sally Walmsley of Soundmór. Summarising the cultural input from the Hill of Armagh, the Very Revd Gregory Dunstan, Dean of Armagh and Keeper of Armagh Public Library had said in advance of the evening: “On Culture Night, we do something different. Hosting visiting artists, performers and musicians allows our visitors to see our buildings in a new light. By working together as neighbours, we offer a unique experience at the heart of Armagh.”
